On a calendar, we’re almost through the thick of winter, but for many it may feel as if  the cold has just started to creep up. Through our guides, we’ve prepared you for caring for your plants through a colder season this year, and you must be a winter dormancy expert by now; but there’s one more cold weather topic left to discuss. What about plants that are naturally winter hardy?

What do we mean by winter hardy? Winter hardy are the plants that you wont need to worry about over watering or under watering during their dormancy, the low maintenance, low light, indoor plants that can survive it all. From snake plants to ficus, here are the 5 best winter hardy plants for any office or home space.

1. Sanseviera laurentii (Snake Plant)

Snake plants are not only great standing or accent pieces, they’re also quite resistant to the changing of seasons. Naturally gifted with drought-resistant capabilities, these vibrant plants will show off their spring green and chartreuse stalks year round, even if you forget to water them. Although they do best in bright indirect light, snake plants can also withstand low light as well, making them a great choice for your winter hardy collection.

2. Succulents

These little cacti types are built to last, storing water in their juicy leaves, leaving very little room for underwatering to ever occur. Prone to overwatering, succulents are best left dried out before being watered and need bright, direct lighting (but no humidity). So leave them on a sunny shelf or windowsill, they’re sure to survive the winter no matter what.

3. Monstera minima

Monstera minima, not to be confused with the ever-popular monstera deliciosa, these plants offer that swiss cheese leaf look while not actually being a monstera at all. What makes the monstera minima a great plant to keep around during the winter is their ability to grow through just about anything. Although tropical, they don’t require that much water (they prefer faster-draining soil types) and also enjoy bright indirect light.

4. Ficus elastica

The ficus elastica, or rubber tree, has definitely been on trend for some time now, and not just for its natural good looks. Another popular pick for the low maintenance plant care crowd, the rubber tree is not picky when it comes to living conditions. Give it some bright indirect light and a watering when the soil dries out and you’re good to go. Check them out today, available in the Plant Store.

5. Pothos

The easy care-free pothos easily makes this winter hardy list. Pothos will thrive in bright indirect light or even low light conditions and can miss out on a water or two. These plants know how to grow, and even do well when dried out. You can learn more about pothos care here, and check them out in our Plant Store.
